Magic Jack – Review
Magic Jack May 17th, 2009The Magic Jack’s appearance can easily be compared to a USB Flash Drive. It’s small and you plug the Magic Jack right into the USB port that’s located on your computer. The Magic Jack will provide you with the ability to use any home telephone with it so that you can make and receive phone calls within the United States and Canada. The Magic Jack is a great addition to the VOIP (voice over internet phone) market and it delivers with its wonderful pack of features that includes voice mail, directory assistance, call waiting, and call forwarding.
The Magic Jack will automatically setup the configuration needed in order to put it to work for you. You will have to provide answers as far as your location, your area code, and the phone number that you wish to use. This only takes a few minutes to complete the installation of Magic Jack. Once the setup is completed, just pick up the phone and voila! You will hear the exact same dial tone that you hear with the more expensive home phone option. The only difference is that you can now say goodbye to digging deep into your pockets to pay a monthly home phone bill. You only pay an initial fee of $39.95 and a yearly fee of $19.95 for each year afterwards.
One of the most talked about benefits of Magic Jack is that it’s very friendly when you need to use in on the go. When you get somewhere with a good high speed internet connection (keeping in mind that satellite internet may not work), just hook up your computer and Magic Jack. You will have your telephone service at the tips of your fingers, ready to slave away for you once again. If you waste tons of money just by keeping in contact with people when you’re on the move, Magic Jack can help you save that money for something else much more enjoyable.
Don’t think that there aren’t any disadvantages when it comes to using Magic Jack, there is one rather significant one that you should know about. You have to have your computer turned on in order to use Magic Jack. This means that you have to configure your computer’s power setting so that it doesn’t hibernate, go on standby, or turn off. Here’s an explanation of how you can change your power setting if you’re using Windows XP.
Changing Power Settings for Windows XP
- Right click on your desktop.
- Left click on properties.
- Left click on screen saver.
- Left click the power button.
- Select none for all of the minuses.
- Click ok, this should be done twice.
- All done!
Another disadvantage with Magic Jack is that if you experience a power outage and you find yourself without a backup UPS that allows your computer to run for 15 minutes after the power outage, you’re out of luck when it comes to calling the power company with your home phone. This is where a cell phone would come in really handy.
Here are a couple of problems that people have had with Magic Jack. They really aren’t big issues.
Fading dial tone that goes in and out: This can be cause by the phone cord that’s used for your Magic Jack. Cheap phone cords won’t fit tightly into their socket and they cause a loose connection. Try using a piece of black electrical tape to secure the phone card in its spot.
Having problems hearing the person on the other end or they are having trouble hearing you: This is usually caused by the volume control on your computer being at too low of a level. Try cranking it up a little bit.
Our Bottom Line: Magic Jack is a great piece of work. Technology has progressed rapidly and Magic Jack is part of today’s modern technology. The price is a sweet deal and the service is wonderful! Sounds too good to be true, but it truly isn’t. Saving money is even easier with Magic Jack.
